Maharashtra's food is distinctive, much like its topography; every region has a different taste. Fish curry, fried prawns, bombil fry (Bombay Duck), and sol kadhi—a chilled drink made from coconut milk and kokum—are among the seafood meals that highlight the coastal locations. Visitors should not miss any of Mumbai's packed marketplaces for their abundance of well-known street food, such as vada pav, pav bhaji, and bhel puri.
Vegetarian dishes are also fairly common in Maharashtrian cuisine. Usually made with rice, lentils, vegetables, chutney, and bhakri—flatbread—a Maharashtrian thali. The state's desserts are also truly exceptional; modaks, which are sweet dumplings, are particularly favored during Ganesh Chaturthi. Usually eaten at festivities and other gatherings, Puran Poli is a celebratory treat—sweet flatbread stuffed with jaggery and lentils.
Most people know Pune for its Chitale Bandhu sweets, particularly its crispy, fiery "Bakarwadi" snack. Try traditional cuisine, including pitla, a savory dish made with gram flour, served alongside bhakri, a common fasting snack in rural Maharashtra.

Apart from seafood, Maharashtra's streets are lined with congested vendors with strong and hot cuisine. Usually termed the Indian burger, vada pav is a spiced potato fry placed inside a bun with garlicky chutney. A rich mix of vegetables presented on buttered bread, Mumbai's favorite meal is Pav Bhaji. Popular in Pune and Nashik, misal pav is a delicious treat—a spicy stew eaten with farsan, crunchy crackers.
Traditional Maharashtrian Dishes
Basic, useful, and satisfying. Foods including bharli vangi (stuffed eggplants), varan bhaat (plain lentils with rice), and puran poli—a mouthwatering flatbread stuffed with lentils and jaggery—showcase the rustic appeal of the state in Maharashtrian home-style cooking. Offer cool relief from the heat with kadhi, kairi panhe, raw mango juice, kokum, and coconut milk digestion drinks. Common dishes eaten on holidays and fasting days, zunka bhakri, sabudana khichdi, and aloo poha, will especially appeal to vegetarians.
