Overview

Did you feel something in your heart? As you read that, we are offering a Do Dahm Yatra with Gomukh Trek from Delhi? We are hundred percent sure, you do! What you are feeling doesn’t happen frequently. But it occurs when you are stuck at your work desk in Delhi or lying in your bed at 2 am. At some point during that time an event, like the dawn that breaks over a dark horizon, will happen. It's really special, the way the universe reveals our calling to us, and only we know. Not anyone else. You will feel pulled towards the divinity. There will be a thirst within you,  a thirst for something that is very old and has been waiting for you since the day you were born. There is an old saying, that says there will be an event when you have made peace with yourself that you have arrived in this life at the appropriate time, and you may not be aware of what is waiting for you. You simply know it is there.
Every year more than three million people undertake this yatra. Many opt for Char Dham yatra, while some go for Do Dham yatra. The impact is the same. People from far away lands come to this place after many difficulties. To get closer to the divinity and to seek peace.

Well, this Do Dham yatra begins from New Delhi. The capital city of India, filled with ancient as well as modern civilisation. This journey is not just an escapade, but more like endless pressures, deadlines weighing down a human soul. And the kind of tiredness that comes from living life in a city and there being no time to check in on yourself at the heart level. The road from Delhi to Gharwal Himalayas is almost 300 kms. But, the distance travelled in a pilgrim's inner landscape is beyond measure. By the time you arrive in Haridwar, you have already begun a journey inside yourself. As soon as you get a glimpse of the mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas. You will see complete snow cold towering peaks glimmering in morning sunlight. The fresh crisp air that will help you, your heart that has been closed for a long time starts to open up, first cautiously but then more confidently, to the world around you.
Delhi is the only place where at least eight civilisations have built their capitals. This city carries the weight of vast history.

Before you start your journey, you must take some time out and stroll through the old part of Delhi. You can explore the heart of the Mughal Empire, which is the huge Red Fort built from red sandstone. You must explore the bustling shopping streets of Chandni Chowk, visit the biggest courtyard of Jama Masjid, it is one of the largest mosques in India. Visit Humayun's Tomb, which by the way is a stunningly beautiful and peaceful garden. You will be amazed at how the architectural power of modern temples like Akshardham Temple rises from the banks of the Yamuna River; many first-time visitors to this temple have described stopping and staring when they see it for the first time. There is so much history in this city that it cannot be contained in museums; it is in the streets, the buildings, and the air itself, holding the combined hopes and dreams and lives of 50 generations of people who have lived in this city throughout time. A city like Delhi is hard to put into words until you have gone somewhere else far away to show you just how this city has affected you.

After your day exploring in Delhi, you will be moving to Haridwar which is 220kms from Delhi. You will witness a complete contrast from Delhi. The roads of Delhi, lead you to divinity. The trip that includes the Gaumukh trek and the Do Dham yatra, which starts in New Delhi, is far more than just a trip that starts in New Delhi. It is part of a trip to New Delhi. You can think of it as a prelude. Seekers feel the pressure or feel tensed that the beginning of this journey is located in New Delhi. But, well that's the beauty of it. The burden that you will be relieved of by the mountains, when you arrive at your destination will have been created in New Delhi. You will find New Delhi one of the most beautiful starting points on earth. Starting from the plains to the mountains is just surreal. This journey ascends through Haridwar where you come across the River Ganga and the Rishikesh which is the yoga capital of India.  The opportunity to witness ganga arti is unmissable, the entire place place is brightly lit each evening by ten thousand floating candles over many generations, and the particular type of silence at Rishikesh is different from any silence that can be experienced at New Delhi; it is deeper and more alive than any other.

Do Dham Yatra With Gomukh Trek is calling you if you are tired of city chaos. This incredible pilgrimage that is waiting with open arms to welcome those whose hearts are burdened by heavy loads for far too long. Devotees and seekers who opt for this trip from Delhi to the holy glacier are left with a very deep impression. As humans, we go through many difficulties in our hearts, and the people who took this trip find peace in their hearts just by reminiscing about it. As they suddenly recall the air of the glacier and the quiet of the mountains when they are in an ordinary Delhi afternoon. All of these moments have renewed their perspective and revealed to them the difference between things that are really big and things that are really small. The mountains put something into you. You get to experience four major encounters. Kedarnath breaks you open. Badrinath makes you feel whole. Gangotri purifies your body and soul and Gaumukh returns you to the source.

Highlights

A scared path to silence and Self Realization
You might think that these journeys will help us explore places but rather this one reveals your own identity. This Do Dham Yatra with Gomukh Trek is not just a mere spiritual journey but it is believed to be a living spiritual corridor. Your journey begins from Delhi. You will be able to experience the city life’s richness together with a journey of transformation. Delhi is  the home to more than 30 million people, living at the same time with different backgrounds. Also, it is the home to many iconic historical sites such as it contains the impressive red sandstone towers of the Red Fort, the 73-metre-high Qutub Minar, which has stood there since 1193 CE (or before). The impressively wide ceremonial area of India Gate, and the immense devotion shown at Akshardham Temple worth millions found on the banks of the River Yamuna. Delhi is a city of 30 centuries' worth of human ambition, beauty and devotion piled on top of one another with a density unlike any other location found on earth. Embarking on the journey from Delhi to the Himalayas marks the first step of the transformation process. When the mountains come into sight through your windshield, something in you has already begun to change at that point.

Beginning at the sacred Gateways
Before you enter the high Himalayas you will pass through the gateway of the Himalayas. Two most sacred cities are Haridwar and Rishikesh. It is believed that there is a footprint of Lord Vishnu in Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri in the wall above the waterline. Haridwar is located at the junction where River Ganga runs out of the mountains and reaches to the plains. Here, you must witness the Grand Evening Arti at Har Ki Pauri, where numerous prayers are heard and offerings are given. Seekers must go. Did you know, interesting facts about Haridwar? Haridwar is also one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism, and it has been continuously and collectively sacred for over 5,000 years, hence making it one of the oldest continually existing spiritual centers in the world. After that, as you move towards Rishikesh the environment gets calmer. It is quieter and more internalized than Haridwar, as this can be viewed as an exhale of a very close and long-held breath. The many spiritual practitioners who have come to Rishikesh over the centuries have categorized it as the Yoga Capital of the World. When in Rishikesh, you must visit Ram Jhula hanging above the Jade Ganga River.

The story of Akhand Jyoti at the shrine of Kedarnath
Well, this is one the most breathtaking experiences you will ever have. Kedarnath is one of the 12 sacred jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. There are a lot of mythologies and values associated with it. It has deep rooted human history in Hindu scriptures. For more than 1200 years this temple, built of ancient grey stone, has endured through the intense Himalayan winters. Not only that, if you remember the most destructive flood of June 2013, many villages were swept away and thousands of lives passed away. However, the Shrine of Kedarnath remained untouched. So the devoted millions have no doubt that Shiva has saved his own house from being damaged by the powers of Mother Nature. Not only that, there has been proof and evidence over many years about the flames flickering for almost more than 6 months within the temple. To be precise, it is known as “Akhand Jyoti” Every year, just prior to the sealing of the temple for its six-month winter closure, the priests carry out their final ceremony by lighting an Akhand Jyoti (an eternal flame) inside the inner sanctum of the shrine. After the ceremony, the temple doors are locked, the valley becomes filled with snow and the air temperature plunges to -20 degrees Celsius.

Spiritual Experience in a Physical Form
Well, as you all know the best view comes after a tough trek. In order to reach the Kedarnath shrine, the pilgrims have to undertake a 16km Trek from Gaurikund. During this trek, every step feels like a surrender to the higher being. The entire route has the blooms of rhododendron forests. You will come across some ancient hamlets, villages and beautiful streams. On the route, you will hear the holy chants of “Har har mahadev”, you will feel elevated. It is believed that this pilgrimage is for love. At this point is where the Goddess Parvati is thought to have completed her sacred tapas or austerities in order to win the affections of the Lord Shiva. The natural hot springs here are the blessings of the Goddess Parvati for the long journey ahead.

Badrinath and the holy Tapt kund
Badrinath temple is situated at the height of 3,133 Meters. As per the seekers and devotees, they say Badirnath makes us feel complete. Welcome to the home of Lord Vishnu, who preserves the universe. It is believed that this valley in which the shrine to him is located was gifted to Lord Vishnu by Lord Shiva. Badrinath is also the only Vishnu temple anywhere on the Himalayan Range. The black Shaligram stone idol of Lord Badri Narayan is considered to be self manifested. Which means, the idol was not shaped by human hands but it emerged on its own from a sacred rock from nature. According to the ancient scriptures this idol was worshipped during the first age of the universe; it was hidden during the time of cosmic dissolution and reappeared through direct divine vision to Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century.

Also, before you enter the shrine of Lord Badri we highly recommend you to take a holy dip in Tapt kund. It is believed that Lord Agni himself blessed this waterbody.  The Tapt Kund is a natural hot spring located right beneath the temple’s complex; it stays warm which is around 45° C. Also, it has been flowing continuously for more than a millennium, even in the coldest of alpine climates. Taking a dip here will make you feel complete. The Tapt Kund remains warm even at the altitude of 10,000 ft in Himalayas due to geothermal activities in rock formation, according to researchers.

Gangotri and Gaumukh will make you Fulfilled
This is legendary, this is the place which is loved by the seekers as “heaven on earth”. As you drive to Gangotri through Harshil Valley the River Baghirathi follows you along. This is one of the most breathtaking journeys in India. This is the place where king Bhagirath performed a thousand years of meditation to call goddess Ganga from the Heavens. And then you will witness the birth place of River Ganga, that is Gaumukh. You must take Gangajal with you as an act of love and commemoration. There are now scientific reports stating that  Gangajal has distinct natural bacteria-fighting abilities due to the presence of specific types of viruses such as bacteriophages contained within the water at levels higher than any other river surveyed. As a result, Gangajal remains fresher and cleaner for much longer than all other rivers studied. For that you will move forward with a 19 kms trek, through Gangotri National Park, passing through birch forests, across multiple moraines. After that, you will come across Bhojbasa (3,775m) where the sunset will light up the top of Shivling. And then to Gaumukh at 4,023 meters, it appears like a cow's mouth glacial lake which is the source of Bhagirathi River.

Itinerary

D 1
Arrival Delhi Airport/Railway Station - Haridwar (230 km/07-08 hr)
Mansa Devi Temple > Chandi Devi Temple > Daksh Mahadev Temple > Ganga Arti

You will be starting from the capital city of Delhi. Before you move onward with the journey, you must visit some of the historical sites in Delhi and relish on some great cuisines. We recommend you to visit the Red fort made up of sandstone. The Qutab Minar, the Iconic India Gate and Akshar Dham Temple. Akshardham Temple, located near the banks of the Yamuna, is a magnificent temple and was dedicated as a place of worship. In some way, the temple can already be considered part of your pilgrimage before you even leave home as the Yamuna is a sacred river with its source in the Himalayas at Yamunotri, which is one of the four Chardham sites. After indulging yourself in Delhi’s city chaos and history, you will start your journey towards Haridwar. This is a 230 kilometre trip to this century old and you will enter Haridwar in the evening hours. As you enter, you will feel the difference in climate, it's much cooler than plains, less polluted and has the freshness of the Ganga River. Also, did you know that Haridwar has been the spiritual center for more than 5000+ years now. The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Haridwar, is the largest peaceful gathering of humans on the planet, often numbering around 70 million participants. Isn’t it interesting? You must gather your heart and visit Har ki Pauri for the glorious Ganga Arti. Overnight stay at Haridwar  and meals included.

D 2
Haridwar - Barkot (179 km/06-07hr)
Haridwar > Rishikesh > Mussoorie > Barkot

This morning, after a good warm breakfast, you will leave for Barkot via Rishikesh. Rishikesh is the yoga Capital of India, and you must visit Ram Jhula, the famous suspension bridge. You will witness many devotees and especially Sadhus sitting still and meditating for days. Yogic culture has welcomed people seeking to understand or practise the art of yoga for centuries today. As new devotees and new seekers arrive, the culture continues to be one of the same ancient ones. You must allow yourself to take a deep breath of the surrounding energy and how the energy of this yoga capital will begin its work in your body and mind, even though you have been exposed to a fast-paced life in Delhi. As you continue your journey to Barkot you will also come across Barkot. Barkot is a small peaceful village at the altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. This village serves as a stopover village as your home base for the first leg of your pilgrimage tomorrow. Overnight stay at Barkot and meals are included.

D 3
Barkot - Yamunotri - Barkot (34 km drive/12km trekking both side)
Jankkichatti > Trekking > Yamunotri Dham Darshan

After a hearty meal you will set out for Janki Chatti, this is the point from where the trek to Yamuotri starts. On the way you witness people from almost every age group and background. As you reach Yamuntori temple, the sight is most incredible. And we would also recommend all the devotees to witness the Surya Kund, it is going to be one of the most profound experiences. The water temperature is around 88 degrees Celsius (190 degrees Fahrenheit). The devotee offers items from their own belongings, such as rice and potatoes, to the boiling, mineral-rich waters of the earth for cooking. The steam rises in white, fluffy clouds above the action of cooking as well as the smell of sulphur and incense. This is what faith looks like in a pure, simple and authentic manner. Overnight stay will be in Barkot and meals are included. Relish yourself with Gharwali meals.

D 4
Barkot - Uttarkashi (104 km/02 hrs drive each side)
Shiv Gufa > Vishwanath Temple > Shopping

Today, after breakfast you will be driving towards Uttrakashi, also known as the Kashi of the North. This is the place, which holds the presence of Shiva. This small town is located on the banks of Bhagirathi. You can take a moment and stand on the banks of the river and observe how consistently and persistently it flows, despite big boulders on the way. Then do visit the Vishvanath Temple, which is one of the major temples in Uttrakashi. The temple grounds are home to a huge trishul that was originally used to fight evil by Goddess Durga. You can also find Shiva’s Gufa in this temple which has naturally created a cave with cool rock walls, and the air inside it is still and quiet like in a cave or old-growth forest. Another landmark in Uttarkashi is the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, one of Asia's best mountaineering training facilities, and the place where the best climbers of the Himalayas have been trained for generations. After the holy visit today, you will stay at Uttrakashi and have warmly cooked Uttrakhand style meals.

D 5
Uttarkashi - Gangnani - Gangotri - Uttarkashi (84 km/02 hrs each side)
Gangnani > Harsil Valley > Bhairav temple > Gangotri Temple

Today, you will start your journey to Gangotri. You will come across one of the most breathtaking landscapes during your journey today. The first stop will be Gangnani, its a small quaint village filled with natural hot springs next to the cold Bhagirathi River, a beautiful contrast between volcanic and glacial elements in nature.  After Gangnani you will travel to the Harsil Valley. As you enter the famous Harshil valley, you will witness one of the most beautiful and picturesque landscapes. Harshil is famous for its apple orchards. Also along your way to the Harsil Valley you will pass the Bhairav Temple, a shrine to the fierce protective God of the Gangotri also known as Lord Shiva, who is believed to protect the entire area.  After that you will arrive at the Gangotri Temple on the river's edge; white and silver against the grey-white sternness of the peaks surrounding the area, with the Bhagirathi River flowing through the gorge below with all the power and sound to fill the whole valley with cold mist. This is the time of your life, you must spend some time enjoying it but also reflecting. Overnight stay in Uttrakashi and after this long day, enjoy meals and get some rest for the next day.

D 6
Uttrakashi - Gangotri - Bhojbasa (84 Kms Drive + 14 Kms Trek, 8 - 9 Hours)
Ganga River > Chirbasa Trek > Bhojbasa Trek

After an early morning breakfast, you will start the wonderful trek to Gangotri. Did you know that the trail to Gangotri is elusive to snow leopards? Well yes it is. And on the way you will come across many beautiful hamlets, which will blow your mind away. The 14 kms trail to Gangatroi is accompanied by river Bhagirathi. The trail starts at the deodar at Gangotri. The halfway point is Chirbasa, so named after the chir pine trees that grow here at the extreme upper altitude. The air is extremely thin, crisp and you can also smell the sweet fragrance of nature. This is a good spot to take a break, as the tree line will now be tapering off and the peaks are beginning to come into view above the tree line. And then you will come across Bhojbasa at 3,775 meters. From here you will get the glimpse of  the first of the Shivling Peak will be visible; the first look at the 6,543 metre granite summit of the Shivling Peak soaring above the glacier like a giant divine representation of the God Shiva created from the mountains themselves. Overnight stay at GMVN guesthouse or ashram, meals are included.

D 7
Bhojbasa - Gaumukh - Tapovan - Bhojbasa (20 km trek/ 11 to 12 hr)
Gaumukh Trek > Tapovan Trek

Today you will be waking up really early, in the profound silence at dawn. Today is the day where you might be challenged physically. But, it will be the most rewarding day of all. The trek from Bhojbasa to Gaumukh is approximately 4 kms but it is one of the most raw, real and surreal paths you will ever come across. You won’t be able to see much vegetation in this area. However, the path passes through ancient moraines, which are large piles of rocks and debris deposited by glaciers over a long period of time. You will witness large piles constituting very, very large boulders in numerous shades of grey, rust, and ochre strewn throughout the area. As you continue to move forward you will witness a glacier emerging from very old rock walls as an ice face that is vast, wrinkled, and heavily crevassed. The mouth of the glacier  appears to have a mouth like a cow. Well, this is the birth place of the Bhagirathi River flowing out; all of this takes place high atop the ancient glacier at a height of 4,023 metres above sea level. After that there is an additional 5 kms trek to Tapovan. Tapovan is a high altitude meadow at 4463 meters. From here you will be able to see the ancient shivling at 6543 meters. Here seekers, sages and sadhus have meditated and it is believed that this is not something of human origin. Apart from this, there is also an interesting fact that Tapovan means 'forest of austerity', and it is here that Lord Ram performed penance after his battle with Ravana at Lanka to alleviate the effects of the massive karmic burden that he received from this war. Also visible from this area is the Chandrashila Summit, where the moon god Chandra also performed his sacred austerities. Overnight stay at Bhojbasa and meals included.

D 8
Bhojbasa - Gangotri (trek down 14 km/8-9 hr) - Uttarkashi (84 km drive/02 hr)
Bhojbasa > Chirbasa > Ganga River

Today after a warm hearty breakfast, the 14km descent to Gangotri begins. The views that you encountered before will start to change slowly. As you start descending, you will see that Gangotri were previously located in front of you on your way up along with the glacier and peaks, moving further away until they disappear into the distance. The forest becomes noticeable again. The temperatures start rising, even though it's cold but still not chilly. As you arrive back at Gangotri, you will start hearing the bird chirping in the wilderness. The sweet song which accompanies all your way. When you arrive at Gangotri, please make one last offering at the temple and say a prayer. Above all, you get to witness the Origin of River Ganga which is at the 4,023 m above sea level. And you must carry Gangajal from the origination point in a copper vessel. You could actually feel the prayers from millions and millions of people for thousands of years, and the unique and unrepeatable essence of the sacred which has now been transformed into liquid. From here, you will be driving back via harshil valley. It is known for vast apple orchids. Overnight stay at Uttrakashi and meals are included.

D 9
Uttarkashi - Rishikesh - Haridwar (186 km/05 hr)
Devprayag > Ram Jhula > Laxman Jhula > Ganga Arti

Today after nourishing breakfast, you will drive towards Rishikesh. And the River Bhagirathi flows together with you. It is just a beautiful reminder that you are not alone. After several days, as you descend, you might feel very emotional. Today the first stop will be Devprayag. This is the confluence of River Bhagirathi. Alaknanda River comes in from the direction of Badrinath; and yet they are born from two different worlds; Bhagirathi is blue/grey and fast moving water coming from the Garhwal mountains.  You must capture some images, as a souvenir for yourself here. And even offer your prayers. From here, you will continue your journey to Rishikesh. You must pay your visit to Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula one last time. As you have been here already, you still might feel the difference because you are in a different place than you were before. If you have time, take a few moments and sit by the river; the stillness of Rishikesh will give you clarity on your journey. After that, you will arrive at Haridwar, the gateway to the holy Himalayas. You already had the experience of the Grand Ganga Arti at Har-ki-Pauri. Have a movement of reflection, with the same flames going up into the same sacred water; the same ancient chants being sung into the same night sky. You will not be the same person who stood there early on in this journey. Overnight stay at Haridwar and relish on some nice meals.

D 10
Haridwar - Delhi (230 km/06 - 07 hrs drive)
Ganga Arti Darshan

Well, this will be the last morning in Haridwar as you will move towards the capital city of India, Delhi. You must take a final dip in the holy Ganga river and have the time to reflect and determine to correct small small things within me myself. Also, do make sure to eat some famous kachori with Jalebi in Haridwar. As you proceed your journey to the city, Delhi greets you as all great cities welcome their pilgrims back to their homes. This city remains the same, the traffic is the same as it was the last time you were on the road in Delhi. And Delhi has not changed at all in the time that you were gone, even if it was just for ten days. You know what, it is believed that the one who takes this pilgrimage and completes it, they experience a lifetime change in consciousness,  clarity, steadiness, and a renewed sense of direction and purpose that will continue to grow and develop for years.
